Since 1974, the KLC has served adults in Kalamazoo County who struggle to read with the free basic literacy and language services they need to live up to their full potential.

Antonia Avila is the 2025 recipient of the Mard Little Award for Adult Learner Excellence.

She is an outstanding example of hard work, dedication, passion for learning, and love of family. She overcame so much on her way to accomplishing many goals, including gaining citizenship and opening a business.

We’d like to invite you to join tutor training with the Kalamazoo Literacy Council! Our services help strengthen reading, writing, spelling, and comprehension skills so adult learners can reach their full potential as parents, employees, and community members. In this training, you will learn effective strategies and techniques for teaching adults with low literacy, whether they’re native English speakers or English language learners. Volunteer hours are flexible and we supply free books, materials, and ongoing support.
